Gangotri (3,100 m) is one of the most sacred pilgrimage sites in India and forms part of the revered Char Dham Yatra. It marks the spiritual origin of the River Ganga, believed to have descended from heaven to earth to cleanse humanity of sins. The Gangotri Temple, built in the 18th century, is dedicated to Goddess Ganga and is surrounded by towering Himalayan peaks. The atmosphere is deeply spiritual, with chanting priests, pilgrims, and the constant sound of the river creating a sense of peace and devotion.

The trek route to Bhojbasa is steeped in mythological and natural significance. Chirbasa, meaning “abode of pine trees,” marks the transition from forested landscapes to barren glacial terrain. Bhojbasa derives its name from birch trees (Bhojpatra), whose bark was historically used to write ancient scriptures. This region has long served as a resting place for sages and pilgrims on their journey to Gaumukh. The dramatic views of Shivling Peak, Meru, and Bhagirathi Group of Peaks make this trek spiritually uplifting and visually spectacular.

Gaumukh, meaning “Cow’s Mouth,” is the snout of the Gangotri Glacier from where the Bhagirathi River emerges. It is one of the holiest natural sites in Hinduism. Tapovan, located above Gaumukh, is believed to be a meditation ground of sages for centuries. The lush meadows contrast dramatically with surrounding ice and rock walls. Mount Shivling, rising majestically above Tapovan, is considered one of the most sacred peaks in the Himalayas and is often referred to as the “Matterhorn of India.” The area radiates spiritual energy and is ideal for reflection, photography, and nature immersion.

Drive back to Rishikesh / Haridwar.
